How Should an Oversized T-Shirt Fit? A Simple Guide

An oversized t-shirt should look relaxed and deliberate, not like you grabbed someone else's shirt. The difference comes down to a few details.

1. The shoulder seam drops

On a regular tee, the shoulder seam sits on the edge of your shoulder. On an oversized tee it sits a few centimetres lower, down on the top of your arm. That dropped shoulder is what creates the relaxed shape.

2. Sleeves reach towards the elbow

Sleeves should be wider and longer than a regular tee, ending somewhere between mid-bicep and the elbow. Short, tight sleeves on a wide body look like a size mistake.

3. The body is roomy but falls straight

You want space through the chest and waist, with the fabric falling straight down rather than ballooning. This is where fabric weight matters: a heavyweight 240 GSM cotton hangs cleanly, while thin fabric tends to cling and twist.

4. Length sits at the hip

The hem should land around your hip, covering the waistband of your jeans or trousers. Much longer starts to look like a dress shirt untucked; much shorter loses the oversized proportion.

Which size should you buy?

Hallberd oversized tees are already cut with extra room. So:

  • Take your usual size for the full oversized look.
  • Go one size down if you prefer a cleaner, closer fit.

Check the measurements on our size guide if you're between sizes.

What to wear it with

Balance a loose top with straight or relaxed bottoms: light-wash straight jeans, cargo trousers, or pleated chinos. Skinny jeans work against the shape. Clean white sneakers finish it.
